Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole anti-infective medication used mainly in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible organisms, particularly anaerobic bacteria and protozoa.

Chemical name is 2-Methyl-5-nitroimidazole-1-ethanol,Soluble in water, slightly soluble in hot water and ethanol, very slightly soluble in water or chloroform. Metronidazole is widely used as medical or animal-use API, Metronidazole is a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent mainly used to control the trichomonad, amebiasis and anaerobe infection.

Metronidazole is also used as a gel preparation in the treatment of the dermatological conditions such as rosacea and fungating tumours.
