Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that has been widely available in the USA as Ceftin since 1977. Glaxo Smith Kline sells the antibiotic in Australia (and other countries, such as Turkey, Israel, Bangladesh and Poland) under the name Zinnat
As for the other cephalosporins, although as a second-generation Cefuroxime is less susceptible to Beta-lactamase and so may have greater activity against Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Lyme disease.
Cefuroxime is a cephalosporin antibiotic. Cefuroxime is used to treat certain kinds of bacterial infections. Cefuroxime will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections. Cefuroxime may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.
